Surrounded by a brilliant halo of sediments in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, Florida Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean, southern Florida is pictured here in shades of brown and green. Two lone fires are marked in red; the northern fire is due west of Orlando, and is sending a plume of smoke in the air. The southern fire is west of Lake Okeechobee, but isn't emitting a visible smoke plume. South of Lake Okeechobee, the Everglades stretch down to the Gulf of Florida. The Everglades is a marshy area known for its pine and mangrove forests, black mud, swamps, and wildlife like the Florida panther, American crocodile, and manatee. Everglades Nation Park, at the southern tip of the peninsula, has been a Unesco World Hertiage site since 1979.
