Living up to it's label as the "Emerald Isle," Ireland shines in verdant glory in this true-color Aqua MODIS image from August 9, 2004. Surrounding the island are deep blue-black bodies of water: the Atlantic Ocean in the west, the Celtic Sea in the south, and the Irish Sea in the east. Atmospheric gravity waves disturb the clouds in the lower left portion of the image, creating curving stripes that stretch for kilometers. On the right side of the image, Scotland, Wales, and the Isle of Man wear similarly-splendid shades of green. Ireland is essentially a depression ringed by relatively low mountains. The bowl of the island was gouged out by advancing and retreating glaciers over the last major ice-age.
