Blankets of dense green foliage drape the Rocky Mountains and surrounding plains of Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming in this true-color Terra MODIS image from July 12, 2004. In southern Idaho, the Snake River winds through the Rockies in the Snake River Plain. An area of darker pixels around the river marks lava fields. Meanwhile, the divided colors of Salt Lake in northern Utah appears in the southern edge of the image. A railroad crossing the lake effectively prevents water flow from the northern half to the southern, allowing certain kinds of algae and bacteria thrive in the northern portion of the lake (which gives it its pinkish color). And on the eastern border of Montana with North Dakota, the Black Hills are a spot of green surrounded by the Great Plains.
