Alaskan Smoke Over Greenland

Smoke from the still-raging Alaskan wildfires curls down off the western coast of Greenland in this true-color Aqua MODIS Image from July 15, 2004. The Alaskan smoke has spread well over the northern Hemisphere, having been spotted over Siberia in eastern Russia, Hudson Bay in northeastern Canada, and now Greenland, which sits at the northern end of the Atlantic Ocean. Meanwhile, Greenland itself is still capped in bright white snow, though summer temperatures keep the edges of the bare and brown. Along the edges of the ice, small melt-water ponds are scattered down the western edge. And along the eastern edge, melting sea-ice swirls in eddies along the coast, looking similar to the clouds floating farther offshore.
