Snow in Scotland

Snow covers the Scottish Highlands in this true-color Terra MODIS image from December 19, 2004. Seemingly bisecting the Highlands from southwest to northeast is a series of long, narrow lakes and rivers, the most famous of which is Loch Ness, at upper right. Loch Ness is connected to the Moray Firth by the River Ness, upon which the city of Inverness perches. South of the Highlands, the snow is confined to the range of mountains curving between the North Sea on the right and the North Channel (which connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Irish Sea) on the left. The lowlands remain clear and a subdued winter green, and the Scottish capital city of Edinburgh sprawls along the southern shore of the Firth of Forth, just below image center.
