Jan Mayen Island

Jan Mayen Island, a barren volcanic island covered in snow and glaciers between the Greenland (upper left) and Norwegian (lower right) seas, is shown here in this true-color Terra MODIS image from August 30, 2004. The island is desolate - there are no native inhabitants, little vegetation, and is exposed to persistent arctic weather. Beerenberg, the volcano that makes up the majority of the island, is the northernmost active volcano on the planet. It last erupted in 1985.
