Cambodia and Vietnam

Credit: MODIS team; NASA, Posted on: Thursday, 20 January 2005, 08:27 CST Download full size image

This true-color Terra MODIS from January 4, 2005, shows fires scattered across Cambodia and Vietnam, while white clouds skate across the Gulf of Thailand and the South China Sea. Tiny low white clouds are scattered across Vietnam's southern tip, particularly across the Mouths of the Mekong just right of image center. The Mekong River, which turns into a wide fertile delta south of Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), originates in central Vietnam north of Cambodia, and flows south across Cambodia and its fertile plains east of the Tonle Sab lake. The southern end of the Tonle Sab is just visible at the top edge of the image, east of the line of fires (bright red dots) on the left. Smoke from the fires casts a light haze over the region; these fires are likely agricultural in nature, and will become more numerous as the fire season progresses in Southeast Asia.
