Western Cuba

Clear winter skies over the western portion of the island-nation of Cuba reveal shallow turquoise waters and the green mountains of Seirra de los Organos. A lone fire makes a red spot against the rolling plains near Pinar del Rio, the largest city west of Havana. Havana itself makes a tan-grey spot on the northern shore east of the Sierra de los Organos. Just ninety miles north of Cuba, across the Straits of Florida, are the Florida Keys - a string of islands extending south and west for 150 miles (240 km) from mainland Florida's southern tip. This true-color Terra MODIS image was acquired on January 22, 2005.
