Spring is making its way to the United States. Rising temperatures are melting the snows along the Sierra Mountains in the west, Great Basin of Nevada, and the Rocky Mountains at image center, letting the still-dormant earth to show through. Yet in California, western Oregon, and western Washington, the valleys are becoming a bright spring green that highlights the deeper wintergreen mountains. Scattered lakes shine like jewels against the mountains and deserts of the west - the Great Salt Lake and Utah Lake in northern Utah, Pyramid and Walter lakes in Nevada, and Tahoe and Mono lakes in California. Bright spots of red mark small fires thoughout the scene. This true-color Terra MODIS image was acquired on March 10, 2005.
