Eighty-Mile Beach

Eighty-Mile Beach in Western Australia makes a bright white ribbon between the Great Sandy Desert of the interior and the deep blue Indian Ocean. This true-color Terra MODIS image, acquired April 15, 2005, shows one of Western Australia's most beautiful and remote coastal regions that is the annual home to hundreds of thousands of migratory birds every spring. Australia's spring season doesn't arrive until the fall starts making an appearance in the Northern Hemisphere, around September-October. Right now, fall and winter are approaching, and the only residents are the local wildlife in the marshlands and mangroves, and the scattered cattle ranchers throughout the region.
