Southwestern United States

Arizona's two largest cities, Phoenix (center of photo) and Tucson (lower right center), make large grey spidery spots against the muted tans, browns, and greens of the desert in the southwestern United States. The dark green band of vegetation covers a multitude of smaller mountain ranges that make up part of the Rocky Mountain chain, and separates the deserts to the south and west from the Colorado Plateau to the northeast. To the west, large swaths of agriculture in the Imperial Valley south of the Salton Sea, and along the Colorado and Gila rivers, add speckled gold and green contrast to the scene. This is a true-color Aqua MODIS image acquired May 15, 2005.
