At the eastern end of the Mediterranean are the nations of Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, and Cyprus, shown here in this true-color Terra MODIS image from May 19, 2005. This clear and colorful image shows the mountains of Turkey and Lebanon gradually smoothing out into the vast desert that stretches from Syria into Iraq and further into the Middle East. At the top of the image, the Black Sea is a deep blue with streaks of green phytoplankton blooms floating along the coast. Bright white snow still coats the mountain peaks in Eastern Turkey, while summer rapidly approaches farther south, bringing scorching temperatures to the region. The Euphrates, one of the most famous and important rivers in this part of the world, flows through the image at lower right, from Turkey, down and across Syria, and into Iraq.
