Dust Storm in Southern Iraq

Winds blowing southeast through southern Iraq picked up dust from the land and carried it out over the Persian Gulf in this true-color Aqua MODIS image from June 18, 2005. The Dust seems to originate in the vast fertile valley between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers - home to the ancient Mesopotamian civilization - and stretch over more than half of Kuwait at lower image center. The dust from the storm and draining rivers creates bright blue-green clouds of sediment in the otherwise black waters of the Gulf as well. The two other countries shown in this image are Saudi Arabia at image bottom and Iran at upper right. The red dot near the Iran border in upper image center marks the location of a fire.
