Cloud-free skies over much of central Alaska on July 25, 2005, revealed dozens of fires burning in the state’s interior. As of July 26, 2005, the Alaska Fire Service estimated that more than 503 fires across the state have burned over 1,400,000 acres. Of those 503 fires, 85 were actively burning. The Aqua MODIS instrument acquired this true-color image on July 25, and active fire locations that MODIS detected are marked in red.
