North polar pack ice surrounds the coasts of Svalbard in the Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar image acquired of Norway's northernmost territory at the height of winter. There were not any settlements on the islands until coal mining began at the end of the 19th century. The largest of the islands is Spitsbergen.
