South Korea

January 17, 2006
South Korea is displayed in this Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) image.

The capital Seoul is located on the Han River in the north-western part of the country. On the image the built up area is seen as a light brown/grey in contrast to the surrounding green. With a growing population of over 12 million the city is one of the largest in the world. If the population is added to that of nearby Inchon and surrounding area, it becomes the world's third biggest built up area (after Tokyo and Mexico City).

South Korea has a fairly rugged mountainous terrain between the contrasting brown of the highland regions (the Taebaek Mountains, just inland from the eastern coast) with the green in the lower areas.
