South Georgia Island, United Kingdom

January 17, 2006
This ASAR (Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar) image is of the South Georgia islands. The islands are part of the Scotia Ridge an underwater mountain chain linking South America and Antarctica. The islands were a dependency of the Falkland Islands until 1985 when they became a separate British dependency with the Sandwich Islands. The only village on South Georgia is Grytviken, and this is mainly inhabited by scientists. An interesting feature in the image is an iceberg that become broke off Antarctica though became though became lodged on the ridge. The form of the iceberg can clearly be seen to the west of the mainly ice-bound islands.
