Sofia, Bulgaria

January 17, 2006
This Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) multitemporal color composite image shows the city of Sofia (bright area), the capital of the Republic of Bulgaria, at the foot of the Vitosha mountain. Vitosha Mountain is the most significant part of the Plana-Zavala Mountain system. It rises immediately above Sofia and is one of the symbols of the capital. Sofia is located in South-eastern Europe and lies on an elevated plain that stretches out from under the Balkan Mountains. Mount Vitosha is about 8 kilometers (5 miles) south of the city and rises 550 meters (1,800 feet) above the plain. The large green patch visible to the southeast of Sofia is the Iskur Reservoir and the deep green color of the water is due to the fact that the day the green color was assigned - 11 July 2004 - was characterized by strong wind. The image is made of three ERS-2 SAR PRI (Precision Radar Image) images, which were acquired on different dates. A RGB (Red Green Blue) color was assigned to each date of acquisition.

Dates of Acquisition (RGB):04 January 2004, 11 July 2004, 02 May 2003
