Seoul South Korea

January 17, 2006
This Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) multitemporal color composite image is centered over Seoul (bright area center left), the capital of the Republic of Korea and one of the ten largest cities in the world with a population of over 11 million people living on about 628 square kilometers. The image shows that the city nestles between two mountain ranges and the Han River (thick blue line) flows west to the Yellow Sea and divides the city into two parts. Clearly visible are the many bridges that connect the older section that lies to the north, to the south residential and industrial areas. The terrain is mostly rugged and mountainous. The orange patch in the lower left corner is an indented coastline characterized by high tidal ranges. The image is made of three ERS-2 SAR PRI (Precision Radar Image) images acquired on different dates and assigning a color (RGB) to each date of acquisition.

Dates of Acquisition (RGB): 28 September 1997, 18 August 2002, 27 October 2002
