New York United States of America

January 18, 2006
This Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) multitemporal color composite image is centered over the New York City area. It is sited among an archipelago of islands astride the Atlantic Ocean off the Eastern Seaboard of North America, surrounding the New York Harbor. The city itself has been built on the three major islands of Manhattan, Staten Island (south), and on western Long Island (Brooklyn and Queens), as well as on the mainland in the Bronx (north). There are also some smaller islands in the surrounding waters. The Hudson River flows from the north into New York Bay, becoming a tidal estuary that separates the Bronx and Manhattan from the great state of New Jersey. The East River, really a tidal strait, stretches from the Long Island Sound to New York Bay, separating the Bronx and Manhattan from Long Island. Also visible are the JFK (center image) and Newark (center left) International Airports. The prominent green rectangle on Manhattan island is Central Park. The bright red area on the western shore of New York Harbor corresponds to the Port Jersey warehouse area and container terminal, where large objects, presumably containers, in different positions on the three acquisition dates result in pure red, green, blue and pink pixels. Likewise, in the harbor, blocks of pure blue, green, or red pixels indicate the position of a ship at that particular date and time. The image is made of three ERS-2 SAR PRI (Precision Radar Image) images acquired on different dates and assigning a color (RGB) to each date of acquisition. Dates of Acquisition (RGB): 21 September 2001, 06 May 2002, 24 January 2003
