Neusiedler Lake - Austria

January 18, 2006
This ERS-2 SAR multitempral image covers the East part of Austria (including a West portion of Slovakia and Hungary).

At the top left is partially visible the capital city of Wien, the largest Austrian town, crossed by the Danube river (identifiable as a long dark-blue strip), the Slovakian town of Bratislava at the middle-top and the large Neusiedler lake.

The Neusiedler Lake is a shallow saline lake straddling the border between Austria and Hungary. The lake, the size of which varies considerably with the seasons, has no natural outlet but is linked by canal (built 1873-95) to a tributary of the Danube River. The lake is a popular recreation area for the Viennese. A sanctuary for rare and migratory birds is maintained here.
