This ASAR APP image shows an area centered over the northern part of Netherlands. The Ijssel river is clearly detectable in the lower part of the image. The northern part of the Flevoland district is visible in the left hand side, divided by the Ketelmeer channel. The image is a color composite (RGB) where the Red channel contains the HH polarized image, the Green channel contains the HV polarized image and the Blue channel contains the ratio between the amplitude in HV and HH. Urban areas with sparse vegetations are generally visible in yellow-green tones indicating equally high backscatter in HH and HV. For instance, several cities (bright green-yellow patches) are clearly visible such as Zwolle in the center of the image, Apeldoorn in the lower center part and Assen in the upper right corner. Smooth surface, such as bare soils or area with low vegetation, are indicated in orange tone (dominant HH backscatter). The blue tones that dominate the image, indicating low HV and HH backscatter, result from snow covered or wet areas. The cyan tones correspond to agricultural fields with growing vegetations (medium HV backscatter).
