This MERIS (MEdium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer) image is of the Namib Desert. The Desert is temperate; it is kept cool and dry by the Benguela offshore current. Population in the region is very sparse, there are two small settlements in the image Walvis Bay and Swakopmund can be seen as greener areas on the coast. The Circular feature in the highlands to the north of the image is Mt. Brandberg standing at 2606 m. The Desert is rich in tungsten and diamonds, which are both mined.
