Mount Everest is visible in this MEdium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) image. The world's highest peak, standing at 8,850 m is situated in the center of this section of the Himalaya chain. A number of important features can also be seen in the image, such as the capital of Nepal, Kathmandu to the south west, and the Brahmaputra River flowing west to east through the center of the image. We can also see the numerous lakes of Tibet. Tibet is a province administrative region of China, though at times has governed itself as an independent state.
