This Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) multitemporal color composite image centers over Madrid. Madrid is the capital not only of Spain but also of the province and autonomous community of Madrid. Madrid is visible as the large bright area situated on the northern boundary of the Meseta Central; a vast and almost treeless plateau covering about 40 percent of the country. The Sistema Central mountain range surrounds the north of the city and divides the Meseta Central into northern and southern sub-regions. The population of the city of Madrid was estimated as being 3,092,759 in the 2003 census and 5,603,285 inhabitants in the whole urban area. The image is made using three ERS-2 SAR PRI (Precision Radar Image) images acquired on different dates. A different RGB color is assigned to each date of acquisition.
