Gujarat, India

January 19, 2006
This MERIS (MEdium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer) shows most of northwestern India. Starting from the left corner is the Indian state of Gujarat, located mostly on the Kathiawar Peninsula. Gujarat has a fertile plain in the south that is cut by several rivers, low hills in the west, and broad mud flats in the north that adjoin the Thar Desert (white area top left).

Center image is the Gulf of Khambhat and the Indian Ocean. The brown green colors in the bay are indicating shallow waters and increased sedimentation. On the right side of the image is the sea coast of the state of Maharashtra and where the city and the natural harbor of Mumbai (Bombay) are located.
