This Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) image is centered over the mountainous and rugged land of Greece. The coastal waters of Greece are shallow and penetrate far inland. Visible are the Gulfs of Corinth and Saroniks, separated by the Isthmus of Corinth (lower center of the image), that divide the Peloponnese from central and northern Greece. In the Saroniks Gulf the natural harbor of Pires is located, which is the port of the city of Athens (bright brown area). Towards the southwest of the capital are the Aegean Islands.

Bands 7 (red), 5 (green) and 2 (blue), corresponding to visible light, were used to create this image.
