Goa, India

January 19, 2006
This Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) image was acquired over the Indian states of Goa (north) and Karnataka. Extending along the western peninsular of India is the Western Ghats mountain range. The slopes facing the Arabian Sea to the west are steep and deeply dissected by streams and sharp, rugged valleys. Gentle slopes and valleys characterize the eastern side and form the western edge of the Deccan Plateau.

Extremely heavy rainfall has resulted in dense tropical forests of bamboo, teak, and other economically important trees along the seaward slopes of the mountains.
