This MERIS (MEdium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer) image centers over Estonia. Estonia is the smallest of the Baltic states. It became an independent state in 1991, the USSR having formerly annexed the republic. With a population of just under 1.5 million it is the smallest of any of the former USSR republics. The capital, and with a population of 400,000, largest city is Tallin. Situated on the Bay of Tallin on the Gulf of Finland it is also a major port and naval station.
