This Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) image centers over the Baltic States. To the north of the image, on the shores of the Gulf of Finland, is Estonia. Its capital Tallinn (population 400,000+) can be seen lying on the cost. The Gulf of Riga can be seen with the Latvian capital, Riga (population 800,000) sitting on its southern shores. The gulf is also at the mouth of the River Daugava to which Riga lies; the river is important for hydroelectric energy, and a number of power stations are situated to the east of the city. South of Latvia is Lithuania. Finally, the shallow waters of the Courland Lagoon or the Kurisches Haff can be seen at the very bottom of the image.
