Copenhagen, Denmark

January 19, 2006
Denmark and Southern Sweden are displayed in this MEdium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) image. Clearly seen in the center of the image is the city of Copenhagen. On the opposite coastline are the Swedish cities of Malmo and Helsingborg. Further north are the Vanern and Vattern Lakes. Looking at the image in more detail, in the south east corner appears the new bridge over the Store Baelt between the islands of Fyn and Sjaelland, linking Copenhagen to the mainland. The Islands of Laeso and Anholt off the east coast in the Kattegat are also visible. The bright green color off the south east of Laeso and the west of Anholt is likely to be suspended sediment; a lot of sedimentation takes place in this particular channel.
