January 20, 2006
This MERIS (MEdium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer) image displays the coast of California, from San Francisco in the north to Los Angeles in the south.

These two cities show up in large grey areas in the image. San Francisco metropolitan area with a population of 7 million can be seen extending around the San Francisco Bay. Los Angeles on the coast south to San Francisco. In between these two cities lie the Coast Ranges, these are separated by the ranges of the Sierra Nevada by the central valley. The valley is one of the most important agricultural areas in the USA, a high concentration of farm fields results as a checkered pattern on the image.
