This Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) shows the city of Calcutta (also known as Kolkata, large bright brown area center left image, partially covered by haze).

The capital of Bengal, it is situated in the eastern part of India on the banks of the River Hugli, an estuary of the Ganges. Calcutta lies to the north of the Bay of Bengal (center lower left image), about 70 kilometer west of Bangladesh. It is the second most populous area of India after Bombay, and is the commercial, financial and manufacturing center of eastern India.
