Berlin, Germany

January 20, 2006
This ASAR APP image shows an area covering a part of the state of Brandenburg, located in Eastern Germany. The city state of Berlin, the national capital of Germany, appears in yellow green tones in the center of the image with Spree and Havel rivers flowing through it. The image is a color composite where the red channel contains the VV polarized image, the green channel contains the VH polarized image and the blue channel contains the ratio between the amplitude in VV and VH. Forestry and agriculture are the two important components of Brandenburg's economy. The image shows clearly the delimitation between these two components thanks to the use of cross-polarized data. Vegetated areas, associated to strong volume scattering, appear in solid green tones in the image due to the high VH scattering while low-vegetated areas corresponding to agricultural crops are shown in purplish tones in the image as a result of the low VH scattering. Several urban areas are seen in the image in magenta and yellow tones depending whether they are densely populated (low VH backscatter) or not (equally high backscatter in VV and VH). The city of Postdam, the capital of the state of Brandenburg, can be seen in the center left of the image, on the river Havel. The Spree river flows in a winding northwest course, passes Berlin and joins the River Havel in Spandau, in the north-west of Berlin. Runways of three airports can be seen in the image, Tegel airport in the north of Berlin, Tempelhof airport in the center of Berlin, whose circular shape can be clearly identified in the image, and Sperenberg, a formerly Soviet airfield, located in the north east of Luckenwalde city, which appears in yellow tones in the bottom left part of the image. "Tiergarten", the largest park in Berlin, appears in dark green tones in the center of the city between the Tegel and Tempelhof airports. Numerous lakes, like the Grosse Muggelsee in the southeast and the Havel lakes in the west of Berlin, can also be seen in the image.
