Beaufort Sea

January 20, 2006
This ASAR image is centered over the ice covered Beaufort Sea, which is part of the Arctic Ocean, and is located north of Alaska and Canada. It is covered with ice floes for most of the year, but navigation is usually possible along the coast of Alaska during the late summer. Extensive petroleum deposits are located offshore in this area. Oil drilling is allowed only in the winter months because the sea is the breeding and migration route of the bowhead whales, the staple diet of the local Inuit people.
