Amsterdam, Netherlands

January 20, 2006
This ENVISAT ASAR multi temporal image centered over Amsterdam, seaport and principal city of the western Netherlands, in Noord-Holland (North Holland) Province, on the IJ River (an arm of the IJsselmeer), near The Hague.

Amsterdam is the country's constitutional capital; the real seat of government, however, is in The Hague. Amsterdam is divided by more than 80 km (more than 50 mi) of canals into about 90 islands joined by about 400 bridges. Almost the entire city rests on a foundation of piles driven through peat and sand to a firm substratum of clay.

Amsterdam the capital, largest city, is visible as a bright white area (center image) . This image was created by three acquisition dates: Red : 19 November 2003 - Green : 19 March 2003 - Blue : 06 August 2003
