Aegean Sea, Turkey

January 20, 2006
This MERIS (Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer) image centers over the Aegean Sea, with Turkey to the east and Greece to the west and north.

In the far northeast of the image is the Black Sea, connected to the Sea of Marmora to its south by the Bosphorus Strait. It is at the mouth of the strait where the city of Istanbul lies. It is the largest city in Turkey with a population of 10 million and is also the chief commercial center. Further down the coast is Izmir which a population of over 2.3 million.

Within the Aegean we can see numerous Greek and Turkish islands, the largest one of which is the Greek Island of Lesbos just off the Turkish coastline. On the Greek side we can see the ancient city of Thessaloniki. To the north of the image we can see the Rhodope and Balkan Mountains, the former creating part of the border between Greece and Bulgaria.
