Adelaide, Australia

January 20, 2006
This Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) image centers over the Spencer and St. Vincent Gulfs in southern Australia, the Yorke Peninsula separating the two.

On the eastern shore of the Gulf St. Vincent is the city of Adelaide. The city is the capital of South Australia and with a population a little over 1 million is the state's largest. To the east of the city the green North Mount Lofty Ranges extend north into the more dry and barren Australian Outback.

The very white area at the top of the image is Lake Torrens, a dry salt lake. On occasions when there has been heavy rainfall the lake has overflown into Spencer Gulf.
