Northern Atlantic Ocean
Smoke and clouds obscure the Northern Atlantic Ocean and Iceland, in this image acquired by the MODIS on the Aqua satellite, May 9, 2006. The smoke is especially visible between Iceland, and Great Britain, which is peeking out from under the clouds on the right side of the image.
There are two fires visible on the image, shown as red dots, in Great Britain. It is possible that some of the smoke could be coming from wildfires in Russia.
Note Island's beautiful snow-covered fjords, along its coastline. Most towns in Iceland are situated on the coast, because the island's interior, the Highlands of Iceland, is old and uninhabitable.
Iceland's capital, Reykjavik, is visible in this image - on the western side of Iceland, the coastline makes the shape of a backwards "C". Reykjavik is on the lower part of the "C".
