Snow in New Zealand

June 22, 2006

It might be summer in the Northern Hemisphere, but it is winter in New Zealand, as shown in this recent MODIS Aqua image. New Zealand is a country in the south-western Pacific Ocean.

It is east of Australia and separated from it by 1250 miles of the Tasman Sea. New Zealand is actually two large islands (the North and South Island, and many smaller islands. This MODIS image shows the South Island.

The South Island is New Zealand's largest land mass and is divided along its length by the Southern Alps, which are covered with snow in this image. Its highest peack is the 12,316 foot tall Mount Cook (or Aoraki in Maori).

New Zealands dramatic and varied landscape has made it popular with tourists and movie-makers.
