South Africa and Lesotho

June 30, 2006

The mountainous country of Lesotho is completely surrounded by the eastern region of South Africa, as shown is this image, acquired by the MODIS on the Terra satellite on June 6, 2006. Lesotho, which has a long and complex history, is the only independent state in the world that lies entirely above 1000 meters in elevation.

In the top right hand corner of the image, South Africa is bordered by the countries of (counter-clockwise): Swaziland, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Botswana.

The red dots on the image represent all the active fires in the region.
