Cloud Streets off New England

January 28, 2007

This MODIS Terra image, captured January 17, 2007, shows unique cloud patterns called "streets", over New England in the US, and the Maritimes in Canada. The Maritimes is a region of eastern Canada on the Atlantic coast - it consists of the provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. The black lines show the borders. The US stats of Main, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and part of NY, including Long Island, are visible.

Much of this image shows snow cover, except for the more southern US states. The cloud formations are all along the coastline. Cloud streets, as they are called, are rows of cumulus or cumulus-type clouds that are aligned parallel to the low-level wind.
