Giant Elliptical Galaxy M87
May 11, 2004
Long-exposure images by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, coupled with radio observations, have revealed new details about the giant elliptical galaxy M87, 50 million light years from Earth. These observations provide spectacular evidence of repetitive outbursts near the galaxy's supermassive black hole — with magnetized rings, bubbles, plumes and jets pointing to ongoing violent activity for hundreds of millions of years.
