The 2001 Great Dust Storms - Tharsis
March 19, 2003
Although dust storms occur year-round on Mars, they often occer in greaternumbers during certain seasons. In particular, it has long been known fromEarth-based telescopic observations that the largest, global dust events(those that enshroud the entire planet) occur during the southern springand summer. As the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) mission began to monitor thisperiod for the second time, particular attention was paid to local and regionaldust storms in anticipation of capturing--for the first time--high spatial-and time-resolution observations of the start of a "global" storm.
