Snow and Cloud Streets Over New England
This image, captured by the MODIS on the Aqua satellite on January 3, 2008, shows snow covering the New England region of the US as well as neighboring Canada. The holiday storm covered parts of the mid-west in snow too.
This image also shows unique cloud patterns called "streets", which are rows of cumulus or cumulus-type clouds that are aligned parallel to the low-level wind. Here, they appear along the coastline of New England and the Maritimes. The Maritimes is the name for the region of eastern Canada consisting of the provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. Black lines show state, country, and province borders.
