Chile and Argentina
This image, captured by the MODIS on the Aqua satellite on February 4, 2008, shows both Chile and Argentina, in South America. Chile lies between the Pacific Ocean in the west and the five-thousand mile-long Andes Mountain range in the the east. Chile is actually divided into fifteen regions - the Los Lagos (top) and Aisen (bottom) regions are shown in this image.
East of the Andes is the country of Argentina - the black line denotes the border between it and Chile. The region of Argentina shown in this image is the high-altitude Monte. Tan and desert-like, this region is arid because it is in the shadow of the Andes and receives little rain.
There are several fires dotting the landscape - they are marked with red dots.
