Typhoon Kalmaegi

July 20, 2008

The MODIS on the Terra satellite captured this image of Typhoon Kalmaegi over Taiwan at 3:10 UTC on July 18, 2008. The Typhoon caused floods and landslides and at least 13 deaths in Taiwan and was to cause more as it grazed the coast of China. The storm had 90 km/h winds when it hit Taiwan, but then lost power and was downgraded to a tropical storm.

The storm did made landfall in China on July 18. Even though it had weakened while crossing the Taiwan Strait, the storm still brought strong winds and rain to the Fujian and Zhejiang Provinces. The typhoon is predicted to hit Korean around July 20th. It may strengthen as it crosses northeast of Taiwan, but will likely weaken again before it gets to Korea.
