Butterfly Nebula

Atlas Image, covering 4.0´ × 4.0´ on the sky, of the Butterfly Nebula. The Butterfly, also known as M 2-9 and IRAS 17028-1004, is thought to be a young planetary nebula, which is the final stage of evolution for stars similar to our Sun. It has a distinctly bipolar structure, evident in the 2MASS image, with a bright central star. 1999 Aug 25-31
