Dumbbell Nebula

Atlas Image mosaic, covering 11.0´ × 11.0´ on the sky, of Messier 27 (M27), the Dumbbell Nebula (also known as NGC 6853). This famous large planetary nebula glows ghostly red through this crowded star field. Its distance from us is not well known, but is likely between 150 pc (490 light years) and 1100 pc (3500 light years). 2000 July 5-11
