Cape Cod and Massachusetts

November 27, 2008
This image of Cape Cod was captured by the MODIS on the Aqua satellite on November 17, 2008. Cape Cod is a peninsula that extends off the state of Massachusetts into the Atlantic Ocean. Visible south of Cape Cod is the island of Martha's Vinyard. The island of Nantucket is east of Martha's Vinyard, but is mostly hidden under cloud cover.

This image is also timely, as the United States observes the Thanksgiving holiday in late November. Thanksgiving commemorates the harvest festival celebrated by the Plymouth colonists and the Native Americans who helped them survive the devastating winter of 1620. Plymouth, Massachusetts, where the Mayflower Pilgrims landed, is located on the west side of Cape Cod Bay.
